 Trouvère is a J-22, hull number 484, made by Tillotson-Pearson of Rhode Island for J-Boats in May 1985, and is owned by Jim and Barbara Fay of Annapolis, MD. Trouvère is kept at the Severn Sailing Association.


The following race crew information is taken from the article "J-22," June 1989 Sailing World, reorganized by crew person.

Bowman

  • Upwind. Look for boats through jib window, watch for puffs and waves, read compass, find marks, adjust outhaul, boomvang, jib and main cunningham
  • Downwind. Jibes pole, looks for marks and puffs, handles spinnaker halyard, plays boomvang, outhaul and cunningham.

Jib/spinnaker trimmer

  • Upwind. Trims jib, monitors speed, watches for puffs and waves, discusses tactics with cockpit crew, adjusts jib halyard on winch.
  • Downwind. Moves back to cockpit and trims spinnaker or jib.

Cockpit

  • Upwind. Helps with mainsail trim, tacks traveler, discusses tactics with jib trimmer and relays information to helmsman.
  • Downwind. Moves forward, looks for puffs, monitors position of other boats, adjusts weight laterally, plays twings, pole up and down, helps with spinnaker guy, reads compass.

Helmsman

  • Upwind. Steers, adjusts traveler, mainsheet, backstay, makes final tactical decisions.
  • Downwind. Steers and plays mainsheet.
