Dr. James Fay, Professor of Music Office: CM-228, Phone: 1-703-323-3177, Fax: 1-703-323-4248 Music Department Office: 1-703-323-3114 E-mail: jfay@nvcc.edu Web: http://www.nvcc.edu/home/nvfayxj Course Description and Objectives: This course (a college freshman 1st semester combined Music Theory and Ear Training course) studies musical notation, scales, triads, key signatures, musical intervals, chords and part-writing, as well as beginning musical analysis. In addition, elementary sight-singing and musical dictation will be studied. The written theory portion of class is conducted by lecture, discussion, homework, and drill. Ear Training is conducted by homework and in-class drill of clapping and counting rhythms, singing using Solfege, and melodic, interval, and harmonic dictation. Prerequisites: While the ability to read music is necessary, it can be learned in the early part of the course. Required Texts and Materials: Theory Essentials, vol. 1, and Workbook, C. Mayfield Music manuscript paper Policies: Students are responsible for attending classes, doing assigned homework and ear training drills on time, and preparing for and taking tests. All College Policies outlined in the College Catalog and Student Handbook will be adhered to, including those of academic integrity. Please be on-time for classes, the nature of our work makes lateness disruptive. Missing greater than 30% of classes will cause a failing grade for the class, regardless of the reason for the absence. Make-up tests will only be given when the student requests the teacher and provides acceptable reasons for the request. Reasonably late homework is acceptable. In case of emergency, please follow the emergency procedure as discussed on the first day of school and as posted in the classroom. NVCC is a place for learning and growing.
