Applied Searching  Techniques Trends  Assignment Resource Reading

What  do you do when bad things happen to a good search?

Problem: Host will not connect - unable to locate server, server doesn't have DNS entry, 404 error
Solution: Site is down or inaccessible, try again later or use another site

For Example: Snakehead fish on CNN.com

Problem: Host can no longer be found - file not found
Solution: Truncate (cut) the address, retry

For ExampleESL research project - http://www.nvcc.edu/loudoun/library/esl/americans
Cut the URL to the root and find other library projects:
http://www.nvcc.edu/loudoun/library/

Problem: I make too many mistakes when I  type the  same search into  3 different search tools.
Solution: Cut and paste the search expression into each tool's search box and you will be error free.

Problem: Too many or too few hits
Solution: Refine search - add more specific terms, broaden search term

For Example: electric grills (too broad) try a specific type of grill
"George Foreman Lean Mean fat-reducing Grilling Machine" +recipes

Problem: Can't find search terms on the page
Solution: Select Edit, select Find in page, enter search term(s)

For Example: Smithsonian  try to find "silk road"

Problem: I received 2 million results
Solution:  Review only the top 2 pages of results the most relevant sites should be listed first.

Problem: Web page will not print.
Solution: Change browsers and try again

Problem: Gross irrelevancy
Solution:  Refine search -, watch for Spam
