  • search tool databases are growing fast; competition is keen to be the largest and fastest database
  • convergence or integration among services and tools is increasing - Open Directory on Google, Hot Bot, Yahoo; Inktomi- powers Hot Bot and MSN; AlltheWeb behind Lycos advanced search; AskJeeves and Alta Vista
  • search terms  are becoming more meaningful - Oingo allows the searcher to specify which meaning they prefer, Excite offers "more like this", AskJeeves allows  natural language queries
  • popularity linking to inform users what are the most frequently "linked -to "sites  (Google) and most frequently "clicked-on sites" (HotBot-Direct Hit)
  • vortals industry specific web sites offering a new wave of e-commerce enabling transactions, publishing news, assembling resources
