English 241 -- American Literature I
English 241, a three-hour semester course, focuses on American Literature from the Puritans to Emily Dickinson. Its prerequisites are English 111 and 112. Through selected writers, we will discuss the seminal ideas that emerge from this period. We will begin with the Puritans, a group of religious separatists who helped establish the foundation of American culture. From this point, we will study the eighteenth century reaction to Puritanism, with that period's beliefs in logic and reason, then its swing toward revolution. The course will then turn to the Romantic Movement and its rebellion against the previous century's emphasis on rationalism.
I will not be teaching English 241 this semester.
