Course Description:

Surveys data transmission systems, communication lines, data sets, network, modes of transmission, protocols, and interfacing.  Emphasizes network structure and operation.  Focuses on application of telecommunications to real-world problems.

 

Course Prerequisite(s): ITE-100 or Satisfactory score on the IT Placement Test

 

Objectives:

 

Students should be able to:

¨      Identify modern communications and network technology trends

¨      Explain the various data transmission media and encoding techniques

¨      Describe the techniques for ensuring reliable data transmission

¨      Explain synchronous and asynchronous transmission, SDLC, error detection and correction

¨      Explain multiplexing techniques, and circuit, message, and packet switching

¨      Discuss issues regarding local area networks, their topologies and protocols used

¨      Explain data communication techniques for the decentralization of data processing

¨      Identify the main elements comprising communications equipment

¨      Explain the ISO/OSI 7-layer model for standards development

Attendance:

Student attendance will be taken before or after the break.  It is in your best interest to attend entire classes.  If you miss five (5) class periods, your grade may drop by two grade letters for the class.  It is your responsibility to ensure that you are registered, in the event that your name is not on the class roster by the end of the first three classes of the course.  In the event that you decide to ‘drop’ from the class for any reason, it is your responsibility to ensure that appropriate information is submitted to the admissions department or registrar’s office.

If you miss class, it is your responsibility to obtain a copy of any notes or handouts.  All Lab work must be completed on your own time.  Tests and/or quizzes may be given early due to travel, medical procedures, etc.  There will be no make-ups for the tests, quizzes, midterm and/or final exam without appropriate documentation.  The final exam maybe closed book.  The instructor reserves the right to limit make-ups for class assignments.

This schedule is tentative at best.   Every effort must be made, however, to keep up.  Additional homework may be given to foster understanding, particularly with the use of application software.
