Welcome to Rm 429C
CHM 245 Hybrid Course

Here is the view of the lab from the front of the room.  The brown cabinet in the center of the photo is one of several that are used to store your Chemkits  The large plastic jugs contain deionized water.  The balances are in the back on the right by the window.  Notice the large black tubes hanging from the ceiling.  Those are the hoods.  All work with toxic and/or volatile and/or flammable chemicals must be done under a hood.  We have seven of them, and often need to put two groups of two students in one hood.

There are three hoods in the back of the room.  The one along the back wall is the 246 prep area.  Along the side wall, the right hood is the CHM 245 prep area.  Here you'll find chemicals and waste containers that cannot be left out on the benchtop.  You may either bring closed containers of toxic material to your desk, and measure it under your own hood; or you can measure material into closed containers at the big hood.  Please don't walk around lab with open containers of  toxic chemicals.

Equipment for vacuum filtrations, fractional distillations and other equipment that 245/6 uses is stored is the white cabinet in the back of the lab.

This is a view from the back of the lab.
On the left on the benchtop are the balances and refractometers.  Above the refractometers are the melting point apparatus.  Beyond those you'll find common glassware like beakers, Erlenmeyers, graduated cylinders, watch glasses, mortars, pestles and so on.
On the right are three pieces of safety equipment: from top to bottom, the fire blanket, the fire extinguisher, and the eye wash.
