Before You Read-Preview

Previewing
is a way to personally connect with reading material before you start reading. When you preview, look for the topic of the reading selection then predict what the reading will be about. Once you've established the topic, think about what you already know about that topic. This will allow your brain to connect to the material before you read it, making it easier for you to relate to and comprehend the meaning behind the words. Previewing involves asking questions. Some questions you might ask are:

What is the topic of the reading?
What do I already know about the topic?
What is my purpose for reading?
How is the material organized?
What will be my plan for reading the material?

One way to prepare your brain for reading is to use a KWL Chart.
