Annotating means to add notes, questions, comments and thoughts to the text you are reading.
Try to:
- underline key words.
- write meanings and clarifications in the margins for unfamiliar vocabulary words and for various concepts.
- ask questions about the material you are reading and answer them as you read.
- jot down anything that strikes you as being important.
- identify and summarize main points in concise statements using your own words.
Annotating is more than just underlining or highlighting--It is thinking about the material you read!
(Do you see how I emphasized only the key words above? This is only one type of annotating. It is now easy to read and comprehend this selection by reading only the bold-faced words.
If you had to study this selection for a test, you would not have to reread the entire selection--only the emphasized words.)
