SECTIONS 011W and 012W

MTH 163

MTH 164

MTH 271

MTH 272

These ADF classes are offered at the Woodbridge campus, NVCC.  These classes do not have a traditional classroom environment.  There are no lectures in the class, no formal instruction.  Students are given the complete assignments for the entire semester at the beginning, broken into units.  There is a test at the end of each unit.  MTH 163 has 6 units, thus 6 tests, and a final exam.  MTH 164 has 5 units, thus 5 tests, and a final exam.  MTH 271 has 6 units, thus 6 tests, and a final exam.  MTH 272 has 7 units, thus 7 tests, and a final exam.  Students study at their own pace and take each test when they are ready for it, perhaps in 1 week or perhaps in 3 weeks.  All tests are taken in the Testing Center and are untimed.  However, all tests must be completed by the end of the semester to gain credit for the course so there is a great emphasis on self-pacing in the class to complete all requirements.  Students are expected to meet each class and ask questions over the material that has been studied outside of class.  The instructor will work one-on-one with each student to help understand the material and answer questions.  There are videos in the library that have excellent instruction for each of the five courses.  These videos are made for the specific textbook, section by section.  They feature an instructor at a chalk board explaining each step, similar to a traditional classroom environment.

ADF classes are good for those that are self-disciplined enough to set their goals, establish a schedule and stick to it.  It is also good for those with flexible schedules or that need more time on tests than are usually given.  ADF classes are NOT good for those students that need the structure of an instructor making specific assignments each day and setting deadlines for work and/or tests.  ADF classes are also NOT good for those students who have always relied on the instructor’s verbal explanation and never tried to read the text or work out examples to learn new material.

Make sure you have registered for the proper section if you have a choice of an ADF class or a traditional lecture class.
