The Early Church

In the early centuries of the Christian religion there many conflicts, both internal and external. Initially, the Roman political powers did not accept Christianity as a legitimate religion and often Christians were persecuted and even martyred for their faith. It was not until the end of the 4th century, thanks to emperor Constantine, that Christianity had become the official religion of the Roman Empire.

Internal conflicts arose over debates regarding the correct beliefs and practices for the church. The early leaders of the church – the bishops – met in councils to discuss and compose what became official doctrine. Creeds such as that of the 4th century Council of Nicea (the Nicene Creed) were written up and the New Testament books were canonized. Groups that held alternative, unofficial views were considered to be heretics.
