IST 100 10N  - Introduction to Information Systems  (3 hour credit course)

 

Prerequisite:      Ability to read and write at a collegiate level.

Required Text:              Discovering Computers 2001- Concepts for a Connected World 

 by Shelly, Cashman, Vermaat (ISBN: 0-7895-5937-4)

 

 

Course description and/or objective: Introduces students to general concepts of computer information systems. Presents terminology and effects of computers on daily life. Discusses available hardware and software as well as their applications. Exposes students to the system development process and computer number systems. Lecture 3 hours per week.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

 

·        2   Deliverables - 20%  (10% each)

·        2   Tests - 40%  (20% each)

·        1 Finals -15%

·        1 Team Project - 15%

·        DCP (Degree Completion Plan) – 10%

 

 

Grading Criteria:

 

·        A   90 – 100

·        B    80 – 89

·        C   70 – 79

·        D   60 – 69

·        Failure: below 60

 

All students must turn in deliverables, tests, final and presentations at the scheduled time. Except in the case of emergencies or the prior approval of instructor, no late assignments will be accepted!  No late assignments will be accepted!  No late assignments will be accepted!

 

Academic integrity: Academic dishonesty cannot be condoned.  When such misconduct is established as having occurred, it subjects you to possible disciplinary actions ranging from admonition to dismissal, along with any grade penalty of the instructor might, in appropriate cases, impose.  Procedural safeguards of due process and appeals are available to you in disciplinary matters.  Section X of the NVCC 1999 – 2000 Student Handbook cites numerous “acts” that are viewed as academic dishonesty.  Please review!

 

 

Attendance policy: Education is a cooperative endeavor between a student and his or her instructor.  Instructors plan a variety of learning activities to help their students’ master the course content.  Your contribution is to participate in these activities within the framework established in the class syllabus.  Successful learning requires good communication between students and instructors; therefore, regular classroom attendance is essential and required.

 

It is your responsibility to inform me prior to an absence from class. You are responsible for making up all course work missed during an absence.  In the event of excessive unexplained absences, you may be administratively withdrawn from the course.

Last day to apply for graduation:  January 25. 2002

 

Last day for schedule adjustments with tuition and textbook refunds:  January 25, 2002

 

Last day to withdraw without grade penalty:  March 21, 2002

 

Fire/Emergency Evacuation Procedures: You will find a framed emergency evacuation plan on one of the walls in each of the classrooms.  This describes the procedures that should be followed, and it diagrams both the primary and secondary routes that are to be used, in case you need to evacuate the building.  Students will be reminded of these procedures at the outset of the first class.
