Photograph of Undissected Cat showing Perfusion Point![]() |
The cats that we dissect have been perfused. Their blood has been removed and replaced with colored latex. This will cause arteries to be colored red and veins to be colored blue. This is often done through the common carotid artery in the neck, and when you first look at your undissected cat you will see a cut in the cat's neck and an artery and often, as is seen here, some spilled latex. Notice that the cat's mouth is open and the tongue is protruding. Picture taken by L. Miller March, 2006 ©L. Miller |

The students are ready to dissect. Notice that they are wearing gloves and either have chosen to wear old clothing or to cover their clothing with an apron. The cat has been removed from the bag, and rinsed. The cat is placed in a dissecting pan with the ventral surface exposed. A string has been placed around the animal's left paw, brought under the pan and is being tied to the right paw so that the cat will be held securely in the pan.
