To help you develop your communicative skills in French, combining structure and immersion; to learn the grammar through induction; to develop an understanding of gestures, non-verbal aspects of communication and other cultural elements through observation and imitation.

By the end of the semester, you should be able to reach the following levels in the four skills:

Listening
Ability to sustain understanding over longer stretches of connected discourse on a number of topics pertaining to different times and places.

Speaking
Able to handle most uncomplicated tasks and social situations. Able to speak in connected discourse in present, past or future tenses.

Reading
Ability to understand fully connected texts dealing with basic personal and social needs. Able to get main ideas from texts featuring description and narration.

Writing
Able to meet many practical writing needs. Can write short messages, take simple notes, write letters. Able to express time and tense. Beginning ability to describe and narrate in paragraphs.

LESSON PLAN
Chapters 6-10will be covered this semester.

We will use the Blackboard Course Management System in this class. All students will have user names and passwords. We will use the Discussion forums and testing features of Blackboard.

We will do periodic oral presentations done with language partners, alone or in groups. We will do writing assignments, described in "Semester Assignments".

French will be the language of the classroom and in some online assignments.

HYBRID CLASS
Due to the online component of hybrid classes, it is a prerequisite that students have Internet access, a current browser, E-mail skills and their VCCS e-mail account enabled. For a definition of hybrid courses, see this excellent FAQ from a North Carolina Community College.

ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance and active participation in all classes are essential. If you must be absent, please inform instructor in advance or, in emergency cases, as soon as possible thereafter. In the event of repeated unexplained absences, your instructor will administratively withdraw you from the course. All unexcused absence will result in grade penalty.
