Kevin Reed - Associate Professor

The sculpture or cairn at left is called an "Inuksuk". Combining the Inuit words for "person" ("inuk-") and "substitute" ("-suk"), Inuksuks can be found from Alaska to Greenland, and serve as navigational aids, guards, greeters, herders, and in many other roles. This particular one stands at the tip of Stanley Park in Vancouver, BC, Canada, overlooking English Bay. It's outstretched arms symbolize "welcome" to ships coming from the Pacific ocean, and was Vancouver's logo for the Winter 2010 Olympic Games.

It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education.
