GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE:

Sociology 201 is the 'study of groups and group behavior'. This is your working definition of Sociology. Sociology will introduce you to concepts and methods used in the study of groups, cultures, and institutions, from both a scientific and Humanistic perspective. The class format combines lecture with small group participation.Groups are composed of different people with very different ideas and views, personalities and cultural backgrounds, learning and interactive styles. The purpose of the groups is first to answer specific questions pertaining to themes raised in selected chapters from the text book. More about the goals and format of these groups later.

REQUIRED TEXT:

Introduction to Sociology,5th Edition, Giddens and Dunier

ATTENDENCE:

No unexcused absentness without good explanation. Afterwards a possible grade reduction or withdrawal from the course will follow. Poor attendance and chronic lateness may affect the student's performance and the class morale so please follow the policy.

EXAMINATIONS AND OTHET COURSE REQUIREMENTS::

Three essay exams are required this semester.  Each exam is closed book and is worth 25pts: 5% of your grade is based on attendance and 20 points is based on your group participation and additional individual or group projects. Total points=100.
