MARRIAGE AND FAMILY 215 IS A COURSE DESIGNED TO COMMUNICATE THE VALUE OF SOCIOLOGY/SOCIAL SCIENCE TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF INTIMATE RELATIONSHIPS. THE CLASS IS BASED ON GROUP DISCUSSION AND A HANDS ON APPLICATION OF THE COURSE MATERIAL TO YOUR PERSONAL LIFE. HERE ARE SOME OF THE THEMES COVERED IN THE COURSE. ALSO RECOMMENDED IN SOCIOLOGY 298-COUPLES COUNSELING, AN ELECTIVE AND A WORKSHIP ON RELATIONSHIP AND MARRIAGE IMPROVEMENT.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE:

Sociology of the Family is a course designed to communicate the value of Sociology to the understanding of intimate relationships and the family as an institution. The class is structured around group discussion and a hands on application of the text and additional course materials to your personal life.

ATTENDANCE:

No unexcused absentness without instructor approval. A possible grade reduction or withdrawal could result. Attendance effects the student performance and class morale so please attend as regularly as you can.

EXAMINATIONS AND OTHER REQUIRED WORK ASSIGNMENTS:

For the six week course there are no examinations. Workbook chapter assignments are to be completed before class and kept in a journal incorporating the class discussions and your assessment of the material in the textbook chapters..  This journal equals 90% of your grade while the other 10 consists of class attendance and participation.

COURSE AND CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS:

  1. Students will keep a journal containing the Personal Involvement Assessment assignment for each study guide handout chapter and notes drawn from ouir classroom discussions.  This material will go into a journal which constitutes 50% of your grade for the semester.
  2. There are two take home exams in this course each worth 25 points; the exams must be double-spaced and incorporate some outside sources, books, journal articles, internet, and personal experience/interviews.  The length of exam should not exceed six pages.
