Group 1: What is the relationship between social change and collective behavior; what is collective behavior, when is it likely to occur.
Group2: What is a crowd and what causes crowd behavior to occur; what are the primary forms of mass behavior?
Group 3: What are the major types of social movement, and what are their goals? Choose one social movement like feminism or 'support groups' like AA, or 'religious/political fundamentalism', and detail it's history, goals, and future.
Group 4: What theories do sociologists use to explain the origins
of social movements and why people join them?
CHAPTER 13: FAMILIES AND INTIMATE RELATIONSHIPS
The first thing I would like you to do is list three things in order of importance that you would consider important, essential, maybe even non-negotiable in a long-term relationship or marriage.

Group 1: Examine the theories in the beginning of the chapter; the evolution of family from producer to consumer unit and explain how each theory reviews the roles of men and women in marriage.
Group 2: Look at courtship and dating today and explain why dating seems to prepare people more for divorce then marriage. Why get married and what are men and women looking for? Why have children?
Group 3: List and discuss the causes and consequences of divorce.
Group 4: From a consumer point of view, can a person or couple design or customize their marriage to suit their changing needs and expectations? Make recommendation to improve marriage.
CHAPTER 15:
Group 1: How does religion and science explore and explain nature? Outline the three theories on religion discussed in the beginning of the chapter.
Group 2: Describe different types of religious organizations and pay particular attention to the role of cults.
Group 3: Outline the role of religion in American history by examining important issues, trends, and the principal of separation of church and state.
Group 4: Religion is both a community and an institution.
In the light of Sept. 11th, explore the power of religion in spiritual
and political context. Also explore examples of modern narratives/legends
and rituals such as the Olympics that may have mythical/symbolic roles
to play in modern culture.

Group 3: Outline the theories on mass media and
it's influence in society and discuss the article, We've Built Shock
Into the culture.
Group 4: Discuss the impact of the Internet in education
and in our society.
CHAPTER 18:
Group 3: Outline the history of sexuality inand quality of health care in America.
Group 2: Research and discuss the benefits and drawbacks off HMO's-health maintainence organizations.
Group 3: This chapter discusses the Sociology of the Body and the sexual health of America-what's this all about?
Group 4: How would your group solve the twin problems of providing
health care for nearly 40 m illion Americans who have none and 'rationing
health care' as the cost of health care continues to rise dramatically.
STUDY QUESTIONS FOR CHPT. 13: POWER AND POLITICS
STORY:
There is a story that Stalin, the dictator of the Soviet
Union and a role model for Saddam Hussein and many other dictators, was
told that the Catholic Pope exercised considerable authority over millions
of Catholics: Stalin replied -"but how many army divisions does he command"
Assignment for all groups:
1. Using the included handout on different type
of political systems and different types of power, what types of power
and authority did Stalin and the Pope represent-did Stalin miss the point
about the Pope's authority or not?
GROUP 1:
Using the handout on coalitions of voters in America,
discuss why you vote or not. What would it take to get you to the polls?
Would you vote for a woman President of the United States?
GROUP 2:
The U.S has served as a global policeman in Iraq. Weapons of mass destruction aside, Mr. Bush says that Saddam Hussein was a global criminal, he needed to be removed, and democracy brought to Iraq. With the U.S. as Global Policeman-hopefully with help from other nations like Britain, France, India, China, Japan, etc, was the preemptive war in Iraq the right place to confront terrorism?
GROUP 3:
How would your group handle the Iran nuclear problem?
GROUP 4:
How would your group handle the U.S./North Korea problem,
a nation already possessing nuclear weapons!?
TER 12:
Group 1: Outline the origins of industrialism and the different sectors of a modern economy and compare and contrast capitalism and socialism.
Group 2: Describe the different perspectives on economy and work in the U.S., and the social organization of work.
Group 3: Look at the causes of unemployment, worker resistance and activism and the employment opportunities for persons with a disability.
Group 4: How will the global economy function in the future; give a positive and a pessimistic description and using the Titanic story, draw an analogy between the lack of lifeboats and a lack of jobs. What icebergs lay ahead for the global economy?

Group 3: Briefly outline the history of global urbanization and describe the different perspectives on urbanization and the growth of cities.

Scciety and western style democracy? What about other fundamentalist movements?
