Automotive Program Safety Rules and Procedures
The following safety rules and operating procedures are to be adhered to in the Automotive Labs by students at all times, without exception.
A. Know the location of the evacuation routes; copies of the Automotive Department
evacuation routes are located next to each exit door. During an evacuation you may
be instructed to evacuate towards one of the designated re-assembly points.
B. Know the location of labs safety equipment;
Lab AE 107: First aid kit to the left of the sink, fire blanket in a red cabinet above and
to the left of the sink, fire extinguishers located next to each exit door
Lab AE113: first aid kit above the sink, fire blanket & MSDS located on an upper shelf
next to the exit door, eye wash station to the right of the sink, fire extinguisher located
next to the inside exit door.
Lab AE 119: first aid kit to the left of the sink, fire blanket above the sink and fire
extinguisher located next to the outside exit door.
Lab AE 120: (Hot tank room) Eye wash, first aid kit and fire extinguisher to the right
of the sink.
Lab AE124: first aid kit to the left of the sink, chemical spill, fire blanket and MSDS on
an upper shelf to the left of the sink, fire extinguishers next to each exit door.
Lab AE 125: first aid kit above & to the right of the sink, chemical spill, fire blanket and
MSDS on an upper shelf to the right of the blackboard, eye wash station to the right of
the sink, emergency shower next to the bay door, towards the Auto Body lab, fire
extinguishers located next to each exit door.
Lab AE 126: first aid kit above the sink, chemical spill & MSDS on an upper shelf to the
right of the sink, fire blanket located in red cabinet to the right of the sink, eye wash
to the right of the sink, fire extinguishers next to each exit door.
Lab AE 127: first aid kit upward and above the sink, chemical spill on an upper shelf to
the left of the sink, fire blanket located in red cabinet to the left of the sink, eye wash
station to the right of the sink, fire extinguisher located next to the exit door and to the
right of the sandblast machine.
Lab AE128: first aid kit and eye wash next to the rear exit door, chemical spill & fire
blanket on an upper shelf next to the rear exit door, fire extinguishers located next to
each exit door.
C. Acceptable eye safety devices pertaining to the hazard involved shall be worn in the automotive lab in accordance with ASE standards pertaining to eye protection and as instructed by staff members.
1. Eye safety devices must be worn at all times in the automotive lab.
2. Visitors to the laboratory must wear eye protection
D. All vehicles will have the parking brakes applied. Vehicles with automatic transmissions must be placed in “Park” or “Neutral”; manual transmission vehicles must be placed in “Neutral”.
E. You must roll down the front windows, when in the lab to prevent being locked out
of the vehicle.
F. Appropriate clothing is required in the lab.
1. Leather shoes are required. Steel-toed shoes are recommended.
2. Loose clothing or attire is not permitted.
3. Long hair must be tied-back or secured before entering the lab.
4. All jewelry, metal watches and rings must be removed before entering the lab.
5. Appropriate safety gloves will be worn whenever prolonged contact with solvents, gasoline or other harmful petroleum distillates. Consult with your instructor prior to use.
6. Special rubber gloves and face shields are provided and must be worn when using the parts cleaners in the lab. Face shields must be worn when using bench grinders and the hydraulic press.
7. Special safety equipment must be used when working with Hybrid Electric Vehicles. This includes, but is not limited to; high voltage rubber gloves (with current certification) & face shield. Hybrid vehicles and their components will not be touched by students without the express permission and supervision of an instructor.
G. Vehicle exhaust must be vented to the external exhaust removal system.
H. Asbestos removal equipment must be used during brake and clutch diagnosis/repairs. Never use compressed air on asbestos contaminated parts
I. Students must report any injury to the instructor immediately.
J. Jack stands must be used when a vehicle is raised with a floor jack.
K. Students must bring their own expendable supplies when repairing their own vehicles (i.e. oil, transmission fluid, lubricants, etc…).
L. Program vehicles will be returned to their original, or better, condition prior to the end of each lab period. They are to be parked inside the fenced lot, backed into their designated spots, and locked. Return keys to the instructor or lab technician. Any broken or non functioning items are to be recorded and reported to the instructor.
M. Radios, tapes, or CDs will not be played in any lab area.
N. No Horse Play is allowed in the shop.
O. Students may not use lab equipment or any chemicals without first receiving instruction from the instructor.

Other Lab Rules to be observed:

C. Students may not use college facilities to perform any work for compensation.

E. Laboratory tools and equipment may not be removed from the lab, any attempt to do so will be charged as theft.
F. All lab projects are to be completed, with tools and lab equipment clean and properly stored, 15 minutes before the end of the lab session. All school tools must be returned to the correct boxes and be checked by the Instructor before class can be dismissed.
G. All lab projects require the approval of the instructor and written permission.
H. All lab activities require supervision. You must have instructor approval if extra time is required to complete a task or project.
I. Students may not leave the lab area without instructor permission while labs are in session.
J. Repair to vehicles is not permitted if the required special tools, equipment and /or consumable materials are not available prior to the start of repairs.

N. No used student tires or batteries are permitted to be left on campus and must be properly disposed of offsite.
NOTE: Instructors and staff have the right to dismiss students from that days Lab for failure to follow the above rules and regulations. Repeat offenders will be dismissed from the course.
