Loss or Damage

 

NVCC Automotive Program personnel and students are invited to use their vehicles and applicable equipment for educational experience only during scheduled laboratory sessions. Northern Virginia Community College will not be responsible for theft, loss, or damage to vehicles, parts, tools, and equipment belonging to students or NVCC personnel. All tools, parts, etc. should be marked with the owner’s initials and EMPLID number. Students and staff are responsible for the security of their personal equipment and belongings.

 

 

  1. All students and staff must wear industrial-quality eye protective devices in accordance with the Virginia Statute 22.1-275 while engaged in laboratory activities. Eyewear should conform to ANSI Z87.-2003 (Z87+) standards as designated on the lens and/or frame.

WARNING!  Students will not be allowed access to any laboratory area without approved safety eyewear! DO NOT FORGET!!!

 

  1. All vehicles will have wheels chocked and parking brake applied, with transmissions in “park”(automatics) or neutral.

 

  1. No engines will be run without an exhaust hose connected and the external exhaust system turned on.

 

  1. Appropriate clothing will be worn in the laboratory, to include: shoes will be closed toe (no sandals!), with safety shoes recommended; loose or dangling attire is not permitted; long hair must be tied up or otherwise secured; jewelry must be removed.

 

  1. Dust from brake assemblies will never be blown off with pressurized air. The designated brake parts washer units and/or other prescribed engineering controls must be used.

 

  1. Unauthorized visitors are not permitted in any laboratory area.

 

  1. Ignition keys will be removed from the ignition switch unless needed for testing.

 

  1. Students will not get into cars unless it is necessary for a specific laboratory activity.

 

  1. Smoking, eating, and drinking will not be allowed in any laboratory area.

 

  1. No work will be performed on any student/staff personal vehicle without a signed work order, which must be displayed on the vehicle windshield.

 

  1. No work will be performed on commercial vehicles, i.e. cabs, tow trucks, etc.

 

  1. No laboratory tools or equipment will be used off-campus.

 

  1. Students are required to clean up laboratory areas used during class. The College(and most repair shops) do not provide janitorial services in shop areas. Sufficient time will be given prior to the end of lab sessions for clean-up.

 

  1. NVCC tools and equipment will be properly cleaned and stored prior to their return to the Tool Room.

 

  1. Students are prohibited from doing ANY work in a laboratory area without supervision by an automotive instructor or instructional assistant.

 

  1. Students may not leave a scheduled laboratory session without the permission of their instructor or his/her designee. Leaving a lab session early without permission will result in a grade penalty!

 

  1. No one is allowed in the AE117 tool storage areas except automotive faculty and staff.

 

  1. No work will be performed on vehicles for which repair procedures/specifications are not available.
