Text:     Precalculus,  Enhanced with Graphing Utilites, 5edition

                 by Sullivan and Sullivan

The  TI-83, TI-83Plus or TI-84  graphing calculator is required for this course.

The graphing calculator will be used in class to facilitate understanding the material.  If you need assistance with operating the calculator, please see me during office hours.

We will also be using MathXL, an online Math tutorial program.  We will spend a day in a computer classroom learning how to use Math XL.  You must  either purchase a new book (which comes with an access code) or with an old book,  you will have to purchase the access code.

Math 166 is a precalculus course designed to include the  skills that are necessary for the study of calculus.  This course prepares you for the full calculus sequence (173, 174, 277) necessary for science and computer science majors.   Trigonometry is included in Math 166, whereas Math 163 does not include the unit on trigonometry.  A detailed copy of the course curriculum is on the NVCC web site.

Homework   All homework will be done online with MathXL.  You may redo homework problems for a higher grade if you miss a question.  Be sure that you understand all of the homework, since that is the basis for test and quiz questions.

Quizzes:  Quizzes will frequently be given in class or on MathXL.  They will be based on the homework. If you miss a quiz and have not made arrangements for a makeup BEFORE the next class, you will receive a grade of zero.

Prerequisites:  Arithmetic with rational numbers (including signed numbers, fractions, mixed numbers and decimals); solutions of linear and quadratic equations; operations with polynomials, including factoring; operations with rational expressions; use of integral exponents; and basic geometric concepts.

Calendar:  The last day to drop with a refund is Sept. 10.  The last day to drop with a grade of "W" is

Nov 2.     ( If you stop attending class, YOU must withdraw from the class to avoid a grade of "F".  I do not withdraw students, unless they have never attended.)

Tests:    There will be four tests given.  IF YOU DO NOT SHOW UP FOR A TEST, A GRADE OF ZERO WILL BE GIVEN.  The only exceptions to this rule will be by PRIOR approval of the instructor.

Attendance:   There is no specific attendance policy other than missed quizzes and tests will receive a grade of zero.  If you are aware of an upcoming necessary absence, please notify me in advance so we can make arrangements for missed work.  Absences due to extenuating circumstances will be handled on an individual basis.

Grades:    Your grade will be calculated on the following basis:

                                Tests                                       60%

                                Quizzes and Projects          10%

                                 Final exam                           20%

Your total percentage will determine your grade by the scale:

                            70 - 79         ....... C
