Attendance and Student Participation
Education is a cooperative endeavor between the student and the instructor. Successful learning requires good communication between students and instructors; therefore, regular classroom attendance is essential. If you prefer an online experience, take an ELI course.
It is your responsibility to inform your instructor prior to an absence from class, and you are responsible for making up all course work missed during an absence. In the event of unexplained absences, especially if you miss the first three weeks of class, your instructor will withdraw you administratively from the course.
Homework must be handed in on time, and attendance is mandatory when a test is given.
Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty includes cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of dishonorable conduct. Penalties can range from the issuance of failing grades (on an assignment, an exam, or the course) to being referred to the Dean of Students for further disciplinary action, including possible expulsion from the college. More detailed information about the College policy is in the College Catalog and the Student Handbook.
Fire/Emergency Evacuation Procedures
In case of emergency, please follow the emergency procedure as discussed on the first day of class and as posted in the classroom.
Dropping or Changing to Audit
January 26, 2012 is the last day to drop this class with a tuition refund, or change to audit. No exceptions will be made to this rule.
Withdrawal
March 23, 2012 is the last day to withdraw from the class without a grade penalty. If you withdraw after this date, you will get an F. Any exception requires official documentation and the Dean's signature, and I guarantee you this is virtually impossible to get.
Inclement Weather/Closing
You may find out whether the college is closed by checking the web site, the tv or radio news, or by signing up for text message announcements. Please visit http://www.nvcc.edu/depts/homepage/closing.htm for detailed information.
Safety / Special Needs
NOVA is a place for learning and growing. You should feel safe and comfortable anywhere on this campus. In order to meet this objective, you should: a) let your instructor, his/her supervisor, the Dean of Students or Provost know if any unsafe, unwelcome or uncomfortable situation arises that interferes with the learning process; b) inform the instructor within the first two weeks of classes if you have special needs or a disability that may affect your performance in this course.
