Laboratory Book Requirements for CHM 111/112 and CHM 245/246,

revised 1/29/07

General Requirements:

a)      A composition type notebook with permanent binding is required.

b)      The first three pages are reserved for a Table of Contents which is kept updated by title and page numbers of each experiment.

c)      The experiment is recorded on the right page only; the left page is used for drawings, rough calculations, and other notations in support of the experiment.

d)      Only ink is permitted, no pages made be removed, corrections are done by drawing a line through the word, paragraph, or page and rewriting the incorrect entry.

e)      Graphs must be done on graph paper

f)        At the end of each lab, the last page containing an entry is dated and signed

Each experiment should include the following sections:

  1. Title of Experiment
  2. Prelab-description of experimental plan, safety precautions that must be taken, and answers to any pre-lab questions
  3. Observations:- all significant procedures and observations made during the experiment
  4. Raw Data-All numerical data obtained directly from the experiment before it is graphed, used in calculations, or otherwise processed. For organic prep experiments include a mole table that gives for each reactant its name, molecular mass, quantity used or produced in grams , moles used/produced, and moles required by the reaction stoichiometry-see sample report.
  5. Results-A list, graph, tabulation or verbal description of the significant results of the experiment
  6. Discussion-A description of the scientific problem the experiment was designed to solve and your interpretation of the results as they pertain to that problem
  7. Conclusions-A statement of your final conclusions related to the problem and an explanation how you arrived at your conclusions, showing clearly how they are supported by the experimental evidence.
  8. Exercises: Your answers to all assigner exercises, showing your calculations and reasoning where applicable
