Special Needs and Accommodation:

If you have any medical condition that may be aggravated by laboratory chemicals (e.g., allergies, pregnancy, etc), you must report this to your instructor. Any student who thinks he/she may need an accommodation based on a disability should make an appointment to see a counselor for disability services. You must provide a memorandum of accommodation which can be obtained from the Counselor for Disability Services, Academic Center, Room 228 Bisdorf building Tel No. (703) 845- 6067

Lab Work: Laboratory safety rules must be obeyed at all times in the Lab. Splash proof goggles must be worn while ANYONE is conducting an experiment in the Lab. Shoes that cover the whole foot are required. Sandals are prohibited. Students normally will work in groups of three while acquiring data. All data analysis will be completed individually.

Due Dates and Grading:

Before you come to lab, each student is required to print out the lab, read it and complete the Pre-Lab. The Pre-Lab is worth 10 points and must be turned in at the beginning of the Lab period. Late Pre labs won't be accepted. A quiz, (worth 20 points) is given at the start of most lab; the material for lab quizzes includes the lab calculations and results of the previous experiment and the procedure of the experiment scheduled for the day's lab. The Lab experiment write-up is worth 30 points and consists of

a) Completed data and analysis report provided in the lab procedure, including answers to the Post questions that are present

An additional page(s), typed or legibly printed, containing the following:

b. conclusion identifying what were the principal findings of the experiment,

c) an error analysis which identifies

i) what step(s) likely introduced error in your experiment,

ii) an explanation of how the errors affected your results

ii) what specifically would you do the experiment differently to minimize the error and how would you do it, and

d) a calculation of the percent error when the true value is given or can be obtained

The Lab Report is due at the beginning of the next lab period. The lowest Pre-Lab, Lab Quiz, and Lab report grade will be dropped. If one lab is missed, it will be considered to be the lowest lab grade and it will be dropped. If two or more labs are missed, zeros will be averaged into the student’s grade. Late pre lab and lab reports are subject to a 50% late penalty.

Your lab grade will be calculated from pre labs (20%), lab report(50%) , and lab quizzes (30%). This grade will be given to your lecture instructor. The Lab Grade constitutes about 25% of your course grade.

Cheating:  Any attempt to give or receive information improperly (Cheating) on an Exam, Pre lab, lab quiz, or lab report will result in an immediate zero for that item that cannot be dropped.  This includes looking at another student's exam or quiz, having any type of un authorized note on your desk or person during an exam or quiz.  Providing information to another student during an exam or quiz is also cheating and will result in both of you getting zeros.  A second attempt at cheating will result in an automatic F for the course.

Attendance: Regular attendance is required. Failure to attend Lab regularly will result in failure of the Lab.

Lab Make-Ups: If you are absent for a CHM 111 lab, you can make it up the same week with another CHM 111 Lab.See NOVA Schedule of Classes for other lab times. If possible, contact the lab instructor for the lab that you plan to attend for the make-u p in advance, to let him/her know that you are coming. Attending another lab is only permitted for an infrequent emergency and is not permitted to become a regular occurrence. Special permission from me is required to use this make-up provision more than once during the semester. Lab Reports generated from another CHEM 111 Lab session must be signed by the instructor of that lab, turned in as an individually assignment, and adhere to the requirements identified above.

Lab Safety: Splash resistant goggles must be worn in the Lab whenever anyone is doing an experiment, or until the instructor indicates it is safe to remove your goggles. You can purchase appropriate goggles in the school bookstore, another school bookstore, or on the INTERNET. Shoes must completely cover the feet. Sandals or open-toes shoes also are not allowed in the Lab. A student not wearing approved goggles or shoes will be asked to leave the Lab. This will result in a zero grade for the lab missed.(A piece of advice: Keep your goggles and a pair of appropriate shoes in your car or backpack.)

Topics to be covered:Experiments pertaining to Chemical Foundations; Atoms; Atomic Structure and Periodicity; Bonding; Molecules and Ions; Stoichiometry; Chemical Reactions; Thermochemistry and Gases.
