Learning Community |
Your
success in college matters to us. We are excited to introduce Learning
Communities as a new strategy for NOVA. Your SDV 100 and MTH 3 are
linked forming a learning community. The students enrolled in these
linked classes will work together with faculty on shared assignments and
learning opportunities. We will focus on helping you become a
better learner with strong communication skills. This is an opportunity
for you to get to know your professors and classmates better, to build a
supportive academic network, to prepare for your next math course, and
to improve your study skills to become a successful college student. |
||||||||||||||
|
MTH 3 Course information |
The purpose of this course is to develop competency in the basic algebraic skills necessary to succeed in college-level math courses. Topics include real numbers, equations and inequalities, exponents, polynomials, Cartesian coordinate system, rational expressions, radicals and applications. It does not count for credit for any degree at NOVA. It is a prerequisite for most college credit math courses. You should have a qualifying score on the placement test. If you do not, you should not take the class. A detailed list of the course objectives is on the web site http://www.nvcc.edu/depts/academic/coursecont/prefixesm.htm#mth
|
SDV 100 Course Information |
College Success Skills is designed to help you discover information that will make your adjustment to NOVA a little bit easier. You will have the opportunity to learn study skills with an emphasis on math, explore your personal interests, and expand some of your educational and career plans. You will also learn about the different offices, policies and procedures of Northern Virginia Community College’s Loudoun campus.

|
Calculator |
After we complete chapter 3 in MTH 3, you may want to have a calculator that does basic arithmetic calculations. If you are planning to take Algebra II, Precalculus and Calculus on this campus, you may want to consider one of the TI-83 or TI-84 models. There are calculators on reserve in the library and in the Math Center for use while you are on campus. I do not lend calculators and students may not share calculators on tests or quizzes. Cell phones, TI89s or TI92s may not be used.
|
SDV 100 Grades |
Academic Expectations: This is a college level course so college
level effort is expected. Any late assignments will result in point
deductions. You can earn up to 600 points during the course of the
semester. See below for what and how you will be graded on. All projects
and/or assignments will include a rubric. The grading scale can be
changed with teacher discretion should the need arise. You will be
informed if that occurs. Copies of all assignments will be
provided on blackboard. ALL assignments must be typed unless
otherwise noted. 540 – 600 = A, 480 – 539 = B, 420 – 479 = C, 360 – 419 = D, 0 -- 359 = F Participation & Attendance (10 points per class) 130 WAM Chapter Review Questions & Assignments (15 points per chapter) 120 Oral Presentation 60 Scavenger Hunt 20 Note Taking Activity 15 SCOUT NOVA/LRS Assignment 25 Time Management Assignment 50 College Transfer Project 50 Career Exploration Assignment 60 Final Exam (take home) 70 TOTAL Points 600 |

|
MTH 3 Grades
|
S: Satisfactory completion of the course. Requires a homework
average of at least 80%, an over-all average of at least 75% and a score
of at least 70% on the final exam. R: Re-enroll another semester to repeat Algebra I. Given if you don’t pass, but you had regular attendance, participation and effort. U: Unsatisfactory completion of the course. Given if you don’t pass and you have had frequent absences, poor participation, etc.
|
||||||||||||||
|
Makeups for Math |
There are no makeups. If you miss a written test, your final exam counts double. If you miss 2 or more written tests, your grade is a zero on each. A missed MathXL quiz or in-class quiz is a zero. Exceptions for extenuating circumstances will be handled on an individual basis and only if your homework average is at least 80%. You must contact me PRIOR to the scheduled test or quiz.
|
Portfolio
|
You will receive a separate handout for the requirements for the Portfolio. If your Portfolio grade is an A and your MathXL homework average is at least 80% at the end of the semester, your math final exam score will replace your lowest math test score. |
|
Participation Grade |
20 points will be added to your lowest math test score before the final exam if you qualify for the participation bonus points. To qualify you may not have more than two absences, you have completed all online quizzes, your homework average is at least 80%, your Portfolio grade is an A and you have been present for all tests and quizzes. Arriving late, leaving early, and disrupting class each count as a half absence. Disruptions include cell phones and other noise makers, food or beverage in the classroom. Missing your oral presentation counts as two absences as well as receiving a zero on the presentation. |
|
Quizzes and Assignments |
Each MathXL quiz may be taken twice and
the higher grade will count. After your first attempt you can review the
quiz and see what you missed. A study plan is generated on MathXL based
on what you missed. Working through the Study Plan, reworking the
homework, reviewing your notes, textbook and the multimedia resources on
Blackboard can help you improve your skills for your second attempt.
MathXL quizzes are due at the beginning of class on the due date. Your
lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester if your
MathXL homework average is at least 80%. In-class quizzes may be announced or unannounced. There will be written assignments, group presentations and some assignments on Blackboard. |
|
Homework |
Math
homework on sections 1.1 – 1.4 is from your textbook. All homework
assignments beginning with 1.5 are on MathXL. Completing homework is
essential. You will not be successful in the course if you do not
complete homework.
MathXL homework assignments may be reworked to improve your score until the due date. You are required to keep your MTH homework in your portfolio. The online MathXL homework should be completed on paper as well as submitting it online. Follow the guidelines in the section on "completing online homework" in your Winning at Math textbook. Practice tests count as two homeworks. |
|
Attendance SDV 100 |
It’s Mandatory!! Your participation and involvement in class will enhance your learning and that of your classmates in this course. Your grade is impacted by your attendance. You will be required to sign in at the beginning of each and every class. For each class you attend (and participate in) you will receive 10 points per class. Arriving late, leaving early, and disrupting class each count as a half absence. Disruptions include cell phones, chewing gum, and other noise makers. If you have more than two absences you will drop one letter grade for each absence. Please see me if there are any extenuating circumstances. You are expected to arrive on time and stay until class is dismissed or participation points will be deducted. If you know that you will miss more than 2 classes, I suggest that you drop the course by September 10 for a full tuition refund or by Friday, November 2 to avoid a grade penalty. Note that if you drop one of these courses you must drop the other. |
|
Attendance |
The importance of class attendance cannot be over emphasized. Regular and prompt attendance is a must for both classes. SDV 100 and MTH 3 should be your only commitment for your class time. Schedule doctor visits, vacations and other things for other times. We have the option of lowering your grade for poor or erratic attendance. This includes incomplete assignments as well as arriving late or leaving early or disrupting the class. In the event that you must miss class, avoid falling behind by completing the missed assignment described in the attached class schedule |
|

|
Students with disabilities |
If you have any disability that requires special classroom or testing needs, please discuss it with us. Mrs. Duman will determine appropriate accommodations for special needs. |
|
Suggestions for success |
Expect to
spend at least 8 – 12 hours per week on MTH 3 outside of class time You are required to read each section of both textbooks before the topics are discussed in class. You are responsible for all of the information in the shaded boxes in the text. Attend class regularly. Do not be absent for tests. Stay with the schedule. Do not fall behind. Complete all homework assignments. Write down the questions you have while completing the assignments. Ask these during class. Ask questions when you do not understand. On the first day, one group can win a door prize by being the first group to compute the number of points required in MTH 3 to have an overall passing grade prior to the final exam. Put this number beside your names on the quiz. Tell us at once. Get extra help from any of the sources listed as soon as you feel you need it. Do not wait until just before test times to study or seek help. Be an active participant in class. Don't just take notes and plan on thinking about the topic later. Before beginning your homework, read over your class notes AND the section in your textbook. Use and read your textbook or use the Multimedia resources in Blackboard or both. Do not wait until shortly before tests to begin reviewing. Instead,
review every day. |
|
Policies and dates |
The last
day to withdraw and receive a grade of W instead of U/F is November
2, 2009.
If you drop one of the courses in the Learning Community, you must drop the other. If we have to evacuate the building, be sure to take all of your
belongings with you. if class is canceled by the college the first day we return will be the same as the first day that we missed. This includes any tests. Check www.nvcc.edu or local media stations for updates on closings. Any special announcements will be on MathXL. It is your responsibility to check the announcements on MathXL. |
|
|
To communicate with us about grades or any personal issues by email, you must use your NVCC-VCCS email account. Put MTH 3/SDV 100 in the subject line. Go to http://www.nvcc.edu/ithd/student/email/google.htm for setup and login. |
|
Academic honesty |
Intellectual honesty is a must! Your work should be your own. Cheating is not tolerated. Anyone found cheating will receive a U/F in the course. Some assignments will be in groups. If you are not sure if working together is cheating or not, ask us for clarification. You are on your honor to complete the MathXL quizzes without any assistance from another person. |
