Math 163 is a 3 credit precalculus course designed to include the skills that are necessary for the study of calculus, in preparation for MATH 271. It is not to be taken if Math 166 has been completed. Trigonometry is included in MTH 166, but not in MTH 163. A detailed list of the course objectives can be seen in the science division office and on the web site: www.nvcc.edu/ces/prefixesM.html#MTH The Loudoun math web page is: www.nvcc.edu/loudoun/scidiv/math/ Note: Math 271 is the calculus course designed for business and social science majors. Prerequisite: Math 163 Math 173 is the calculus course for math, science, computer science and engineering majors. Prerequisite: Math 166 Your enrollment in Math 163 assumes that you have demonstrated competency on the placement test in the following areas: arithmetic with rational numbers, including signed numbers, fractions, mixed numerals and decimals, solutions of linear and quadratic equations, operations with polynomials including factoring; operations with rational expressions including simplifying And use of positive integer exponents and basic geometric concepts. Very little class time will be spent reviewing these topics. Prerequisites for Math 163 are Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry. TEXT and SUPPLIES: Precalculus, a Graphing Approach, fourth edition, by Larson, Hostetler and Edwards (required) A tutorial CD and the Student Solutions Manual that accompanies the text are included. BRING A GRAPHING CALCULATOR EACH DAY TO CLASS. The strongly preferred models are the TI-82, 83 or 83-plus. Instruction on these models will be provided. For all other models, you will have to refer to the users' manual. There are calculator resources on reserve in the library. The Math Center hasTI-83 tutorials on video tape for graphing calculators. If the calculator presents a hardship, please discuss it with me. There are calculators on reserve in the library and in the Math Center for use while you are on campus. Links to tutorials are available on my web page and include:

(this one is through the textbook that you are using). GRADES: The 10-point grading scale is used: 90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79
C, 60-69 D, below 60 F.
Bring your text, graphing calculator, and all completed homework assignments to class each day for the quizzes. If you are present for all tests and quizzes, 10 points will be added to your lowest test score at the end of the semester. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. ATTENDANCE: The importance of class attendance cannot be over emphasized. Regular attendance is a must. Math class should be your only commitment for your class time. Schedule doctor visits, vacations and other things for other times. In the event that you must miss class, avoid falling behind by completing the missed assignment described in the attached class schedule. THERE ARE NO MAKEUP TESTS OR QUIZZES. A missed quiz is a zero. If you miss a test, the weight of your final will be adjusted accordingly for the first missed test. A zero will be the grade if you miss 2 or more tests. IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU NOT MISS ANY TESTS. Exceptions for extenuating circumstances will be handled on an individual basis. You must contact me before the scheduled test. There are a number of ways to do so listed on this syllabus. QUIZZES: Quizzes and any written assignments will be scaled to total 100 points. These may be in-class or take-home, individual or group, closed book, open book, or open notebook. There may be problems from the book, board, overhead projector, a written handout, or your homework notebook. You may be asked to just copy a selection of problems that you have completed for homework. Reading quizzes on assigned sections may also be given. Problems may require a computer. These choices are mine, but the type of assignment that is to be graded will be stated at the time the assignment is given. You should be prepared every day for any of these types of assignments. Read each day's section before attending class, bring all homework completed and organized in a notebook so that you may find specific problems, and bring a graphing calculator every day. Bring your text, graphing calculator, and all completed homework assignments to class each day for the quizzes and any other assignments. I do not lend calculators and students may not share calculators. HOMEWORK: Attached is the class schedule that indicates the section from the text that will be discussed in class and the homework assignment for that section. The homework is due the following day. In each class you may ask about homework problems before proceeding with new topics. Note that homework is not collected or graded, but you cannot expect to progress or to complete the course objectives without conscientiously completing homework assignments. You may be asked to put completed homework problems on the board for discussion. You should plan on spending at least two hours outside class for each one hour in class on homework. HELP: Do not wait until just before test time to get help. Free tutoring service is provided on campus. Sign up in room LR 242. Get help from in-class discussion and individually during office hours. There are some computer-tutor programs, video tapes and help available in The Math Center, room LR 204 The teachers in the Math Center can help you when they are not helping
their own students.
For a current list of math resources available to you go to http://www.nvcc.edu/loudoun/scidiv/math/resources.html Note the last day to withdraw and receive a grade of "W" instead of "F" is March 17, 2005 I do not withdraw students unless the student has never attended. I do not sign for audits. COLLEGE POLICY STATES THERE WILL BE NO EATING OR DRINKING IN THE CLASSROOMS. All cell phones and pagers are to be turned off during class time. It is highly recommended that you form study groups with other members of the class. Talk to me if you need help forming a group. You are required to read each section of the text before it is discussed in class. You are responsible for all of the information in the shaded boxes in the text. Bring all completed homework organized in a notebook so that you may find specific problems and the textbook every day. if class is canceled by the college the first day we return will be the same as the first day that we missed. This includes any tests or quizzes. Check NovaConnect 703-323-3770, www.nvcc.edu or local media stations for updates on closings. any special announcements from me will be autoreply on email or on the messages page: www.nvcc.edu/home/jserbousek/message.html Send me an email and the message will return to you. It is your responsibility to initiate the email and to check the website for messages. If you have any disability that requires special classroom or testing needs, please discuss it with me. Cheating is not tolerated. Anyone found cheating will receive an F in the course. Listed below are some suggestions for success in mathematics classes. Attend class regularly. Do not be absent for tests. Stay with the schedule. Do not fall behind. Complete all homework assignments. Write down the questions you have while completing the assignments. Ask these during class. Check your answers to odd problems. Ask questions when you do not understand. Get extra help from any of the sources listed as soon as you feel you need it. Do not wait until just before test times to study or seek help. Be an active participant in class. Don't just take notes and plan on thinking about the topic later. Before beginning your homework, read over your class notes AND the section in your textbook. Do not wait until shortly before tests to begin reviewing. Instead, review every day. Studying with others is encouraged. You learn more when you discuss the ideas with others. However, don't let others just tell you the answers; make sure you understand Bring your text, graphing calculator, and all completed homework assignments to class each day for the quizzes and any other assignments. I do not lend calculators and students may not share calculators.
