Registered dietitians (RD) and registered dietetic technicans (DTR) work in a variety of settings. Most commonly, registered dietitians are employed in healthcare facitilities like hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and long term care facilities. About 60% of all nutritional professionals work in the clinical care arena. About 30% of dietetians work in food service administration. Dietitians and dietetic technicians work in a multitude of settings in most communities. They work in private practice, food service, pharmaceutical companies, public health departments, sports and fitness centers, wellness programs, educational institutions and research facilities.
There are a number of registered dietitians and dietetic technicians that work in government funded agencies to provide nutrition services to the community. Public health dietitians play a valuble role in supporting the nutritional needs of low income, at risk populations through nutritional assessment and food assistance programs.
There are approximately 52,000 registered dietitians in the United States and 2,800 dietetic technicians registered with the American Dieteic Association.
