With safety rules being misunderstood, revised and created every year, I felt it important to share a wealth of data, publications, presentations and contacts to help all.
As Superintendent of Postal and Distribution Services at Northern Virginia Community College, I represent just a small portion of management that is charged with insuring our work force compliance with ALL safety rules and regulations here at NOVA.
Contrary to some people’s
belief, these rules were not created to “Make life difficult”, but to insure a
safe environment to work in. Statistics have shown that a safe work environment
reduces: overall cost of operations, absenteeism, injuries, and illnesses.
These same safety rules also improve productivity, worker satisfaction,
attendance and retention.
Studies also show that workplaces with active safety and health management systems also have a direct impact on employee lives. “As University of Massachusetts Center for Health Policy and Research associate professor Allard Dembe noted, an occupational injury or illness "potentially affects every aspect of life: the pursuit of a career, leisure activities, religious orientation and practice, personal and group relationships, family responsibilities, involvement in political activities, and so forth."[1]
As a lifelong learner in this field, I have had the good fortune to have been assisted by many over the course of forty-four years in this industry. Many friends, colleagues and associate have shared, freely given and passed on their ideas and knowledge so that our workplace will become safer and continue to do so.
Therefore, here on this website, I am willing to pass on this information in the form of presentations, documents, and policy manuals that I have created, been given and allowed to use.
I have made an effort to give proper credit and citation as to where all this information has come from. They can be used free of charge and are references only. All information is either general or only relevant to Northern Virginia Community College.
If anyone who views this information notices an error in my citations, please contact me with the proper citation information and a verification source. I will then correct it as time allows.
