   The History of Middle East Civilization is a two semester survey of the dominant intellectual, cultural, social, economic, and religious patters in the civilization of Semitic, Indo-European, and Turkic-speaking peoples of the Middle East from pre-Islamic to modern times.

   The first semester includes an examination of the two great empires of the period (Byzantine and Sassanian), Semitic background, pre-Islamic Arabia, the life and teachings of Muhammad, early Muslim conquests, establishment and organization of the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates as well as the historic evolution of the
Turkic-speaking peoples from their beginnings in Central Asia through the decline of the Ottoman Empire. 

Students will examine major aspects of Arabian, Turkish, and Persian cultural history with special emphasis on change and continuity in terms of Islamization and Westernization.
