The History of Western Civilization  (HIS 101-102) is a general survey covering major political, social, economic, cultural, and religious changes in the areas surrounding the Mediterranean Basin and the European continent from the prehistoric period through the Cold War.  Such an ambitious undertaking does have some limitations.  Other great world cultures are discussed only as they directly relation to European problems.   In spite of
commercial contacts resulting in cultural borrowing, the great civilizations of this planet seem to have developed independently.

The first semester  covers the major intellectual, cultural, economic, and political accomplishments  from the pre-historic period through the Christian religious reformation of the sixteenth century.  Topics include:  the Pre-historic Period, Sumerians, Egyptians, Minoans, Mycenaean, Archaic Greeks, Classical Greeks, Hellenistic World, Early Rome, Roman Civilization, Medieval European Civilization, The Renaissance, and the Reformation
