Egyptian Civilization is one of the greatest in the ancient world.  It lasted for 3,000 years, much longer than any other culture in the ancient world.  The Great Sphinx at Giza, the three pyramids of the fourth dynasty, and the treasurers of King "Tut" are familiar images.   For centuries the art and history of ancient Egypt has stirred the imagination and admiration of scholars.

The Step pyramid of Saqqara was constructed for Pharaoh Djoxer by his vizier, Imhotep.  The pyramid began as the traditional rectangular tomb.  These earlier tombs were called mastabas.  By adding rectangle upon rectangle, Imhotep end with a pyramid of six unequal steps.  The height was 204 feet.  This complex is recognized as the first completely stone building in the world.  Eventually, Imhotep was worshipped as god of architecture and medicine.
