"Secrets of the Screen"

This video tells the story of the restoration of a rare six fold Ukiyo-e screen by the 18th century artist Utagawa Toyohartu in the collection of the Japanese Antiquities Department. This is a unique opportunity to share the expertise of Hitsuhiro Abe, master restorer at the British Museum. A story also unfolds of the fascinating but often sad life of the courtesans of the famous Tamaya House in the pleasure quarter of Edo, who are pictured on the screen.
