Textbook and Study Guides
How should you use the assigned text books?
What is the best use of the Study Guides?
The NVCC Alexandria Campus has used Roberts, History
of England since it was first published in 1980.
The book has been well reviewed by experts and former
student evaluations continue to be positive. The book is
a two volume work divided into 31 chapters. Students
have 16 weeks to read, study, and absorb the material.
With this task confronting each of you, I have a few
suggestions. Each chapter contains and introduction
followed by several topics. Make certain that you read
the introduction so that you will have a general
overview of the author’s objectives. Once you begin to
read a section, turn the heading into a question. For
example, under the heading of “Financial Revolution”
turn the heading into “What was the Financial
Revolution?” As you read the section, pick out the
ideas and events that answer the question. After you
have read the section, you should know the answer to the
question. If not, you need to review the section.
I have prepared Study Guides for each week. You should
have the particular Study Guide designed for that week’s
assignment with the textbook when you begin your reading
sessions. The method that I used to prepare the Study
Guides follows. As I read each section, I circled the
items that I thought were important for an understanding
of that particular section. The items that I circled
are the items that you will find on your Study Guide.
The Study Guides should assist you with your learning
and understanding of the material under consideration.
Another point, read some of the material each day. You
cannot read all of the assigned chapters on the day
before the exam. History is just too complicated for
such an approach.
