Northern
Automotive Program
These
rules are in effect for all classes, from 01/01/09 – 07/30/09 or until revised
rules are signed.
The following safety and procedural
rules and operating procedures are to be adhered to by students at all times,
without exception, in the automotive laboratory.
SAFETY:
A.
Acceptable eye safety devices shall
be worn in the auto lab in accordance with

Eye safety devices must be worn at all times in the automotive
lab. Each student is
required to have two
pairs of safety glasses.
2.
Visitors to the laboratory must
wear eye protection.
B. Students
must report all injuries to the instructor immediately.
C. Unauthorized
visitors are not allowed in the lab.
D.
All vehicles will have parking
brakes applied. Vehicles with automatic
transmissions must be placed in park or neutral, manual transmission vehicles
must be placed in neutral. You must roll
down the driver's window when in the lab to prevent being locked-out of the
vehicle, and so that you can hear directions from other Lab Personnel
E. Appropriate
clothing is required during lab periods.
1.
Leather shoes are required. Steel-toed shoes are recommended.
2.
Loose clothing or attire, shorts,
or sleeveless shirts, are not permitted.
3.
Long hair must be tied back or
secured before entering the lab.
4.
All jewelry, metal watches and
rings must be removed before entering the lab.
5.
Rubber gloves will be worn
whenever prolonged contact with solvents, gasoline or other harmful petroleum
distillates is possible.
6.
Special rubber gloves and face
shields are provided and must be worn when using the parts cleaners in the
lab. Face shields must be worn when
using the bench grinders and the hydraulic press.
F. Vehicle
exhaust must be vented to the external exhaust removal system.
G.
Asbestos removal equipment must
be used during brake and clutch diagnosis/repairs. Never use compressed air to clean or dry asbestos contaminated
parts.
H.
Jack stands must be used when the
vehicles are raised with floor jacks.
I.
Where applicable, electric lifts
must be lowered on the safety latches before students may work
under
the car.
Do not raise the lifts above the upper
limit arrows!
J. OSHA approved air nozzles must be used
when using compressed air for cleaning or drying operations.
Never use compressed air to clean or dry
bearings.
K. Students must keep the lab clean and
neat at all times. All work areas must be swept and mopped and all tools and
equipment put away after project completion.
L. Students must eliminate all obstructions (e.g.
air hoses, light cords, and parts) before parts removal or lowering vehicles on
lifts or jacks.
M. Where
applicable, vehicle batteries must be disconnected prior to performing repairs.
OTHER
LAB RULES TO BE OBSERVED:
A. The use of tobacco products, eating, or
drinking is not permitted in the lab. Use the break area outside room MT102.
B. Students may not bring in vehicles other
than their own, those belonging to their immediate family, and program
vehicles. Instructor permission is
required in any case.
C. Students
may not use college facilities to perform any work for compensation.
D. Commercial
vehicles are not permitted in the lab at any time. (N/A for the Diesel Program)
E. Laboratory
tools and equipment may not be removed from the lab.
F. All lab projects are to be completed,
and tools and lab equipment are to be cleaned and stored 15 minutes before lab
ends.
G. All lab projects require instructor
approval. Projects, other than those on
the lab contract, require instructor approval.
H. Lab activities require supervision. If you need extra lab time to complete a task
or project, you must receive permission from your instructor.
I. Students may not leave the laboratory
while labs are in session, without permission from the instructor.
J. Faculty
offices and telephones are for faculty use only.
K. Personal belongings should not be
brought into the lab. Lockers are
provided in the locker room and a coat rack is located in the hallway leading
to the lab. Students are
responsible for providing their own locks.
L. Repairs to vehicles are not permitted
where appropriate specifications and repair procedures are not available.
M. Students are required to bring and use
their own hand tools. A tool list is available from the instructor.
N. Students must bring their own expendable
supplies when repairing their own vehicles (i.e. oil, transmission fluid,
lubricants, etc.…).
O. Program vehicles will be returned to
their original condition prior to the end of each lab period. They are to be parked inside the fenced lot,
backed in and locked, with
batteries removed. Return keys to the
instructor.
P. Program vehicles are only allowed to be
test driven in the "B-4" Student Parking lot, which is located north
of the Maintenance building (or to the right of the Maintenance building as
viewed from the front of the MT building).
The vehicles must be driven directly to and from the "B-4"
Student Parking Lot. The maximum vehicle
speed shall not exceed 20 miles per hour.
If there are any other cars in the lot at the time of the
test-drive, then the maximum speed shall be 15 miles per hour. The program
vehicles are not to be driven on the main street or any other parking lots.
Failure to adhere to this rule will result in criminal charges for the
driver of the program vehicle, and the driver will not be allowed to drive any
other program vehicles.
Q. Students
may not use lab equipment without first receiving instruction from the
instructor.
R. Reusable red shop rags are
provided. Return used rags to the red
fireproof safety containers located around the lab
S. Students may not park their vehicles
adjacent to the lab. These areas are FIRELANES and will be kept clear at all
times. Campus police without warning will ticket you!
T. Radios
or other music players will not be played in any lab area.
U. Use of cell phones are
not permitted in the classrooms or the labs.
V. All tool boxes and projects must be labeled with the students
name, phone number, course number, instructor’s name, current semester and
year.
W. All student projects and tools must be removed from the campus
and lockers emptied no later than one week after the end of the semester. All
items that remain are subject to disposition by the automotive /diesel faculty
and staff.
NOTE: Students not following Laboratory Rules will be dismissed from the lab period. Two dismissals from the lab for safety violations will result in permanent dismissal from the class, and a grade of "F" for the course.
S 22‑10.2 PROTECTIVE EYE DEVICES. Every student and teacher in any school,
college or university participating in any of the following courses:
(A) Vocational
or industrial arts shops or laboratories involving experience with:
1. Hot molten metals
2. Milling, sawing, turning, shaping, cutting,
grinding, or stamping of any solid materials
3. Heat treatment, tempering or kiln
firing of any metal or other materials
4. Gas or electric arc welding
5. Repair of any vehicle
6. Caustic or explosive materials
(B) Chemical or combined chemical‑physical laboratories involving caustic or explosive chemicals of hot liquids or solids; shall be required to wear industrial quality eye protective devices at all times while participating in such courses or laboratories.
The governing board or authority of any
public or private school or the governing body of each institution of higher
learning shall furnish the eye protective devices prescribed in this section
free of charge or at cost to the students and teachers of the school
participating in the course set out in this section; provided, however, that
such devices may be furnished by parents or guardians of such students. Eye
protective devices shall be furnished to all visitors to such courses.
"Industrial quality eye protective
devices", as used in this section means devices providing side protection
and meeting the standards of the American Standards Association Safety Code for
Head, Eye and Respiratory Protection 22.1.1959, promulgated by the American
Standards Association, Incorporated. (1966, C.69).
The number of this section was assigned
by the Virginia Code Commission, the 1966 act having assigned no number.
