The objective of the lab is to enhance your understanding of the Biology 102 lecture material with a hands-on examination of animal and plant tissues, organs, and organ systems.
Required Text - Inquiry into Life, 11th edition - Lab Manual by Sylvia Mader.
The lab grade is 25% of your Bio 102 grade. Your lab grade will be determined in the following manner:
q 75% of the lab grade will be determined by the lab quizzes. There are twleve lab quizzes each worth 10 points. I will drop the lowest quiz grade. Quizzes will be a combination of identification of things observed during the labs, short answers, and multiple-choice questions. The quiz questions will come directly from material in the lab and the lab textbook.
q 25% of the lab grade will be based on the grading of a lab notebook maintained by students. For each lab, this bound notebook must include the following sections (in bold)
1. Title - the lab number (1 through 12, starting with the lab on June 28), title, and date.
2. The purpose of the lab – this can usually be found in the beginning of the lab chapter in the lab textbook.
3. A listing of the materials used in the lab – you will find these on the tables in the lab.
4. For each lab activity:
A. describe what you did during the activity (method). This often involves looking at something and sketching and labeling it. Sometimes it involves measuring something and collecting data.
B. describe what you found (results). This can include a labeled drawing or a data table.
5. End the lab write-up with a conclusion of the five or six most important things you learned from the lab. Do not write a long list of everything the lab included, but those few things that you personally found interesting.
Attendance
Attendance in both lecture and lab is crucial for successful course performance. Tardiness will also impact on your lab grade. Each lab starts with a quiz and if your are late is slows the whole lab down. Being on time and attending classes and labs are skills that carryover to your professional career and are important to your academic success at NVCC.
Conduct
Please remember that NOVA expects appropriate responsible behavior during lab exercises and that all students are expected to abide by the NVCC honor code. Failure to abide by this honor code will result in an automatic "0" for the test or work where this code has been violated.
Lab classrooms contain dangerous materials and the equipment and chemicals provided to you should be treated with respect and caution. If you receive an injury in lab or become ill due to fumes in the lab, please inform me immediately. Whenever you leave the lab, please inform me and before leaving, remove your lab apron and wash your hands. Once lab has started, please turn off your cell phones so the ring does not startle another student and cause an accident.
