Hello students. My name is Gail Hook, and I am your instructor for Western Civilization I this summer. This summer I also teach HIS 101 and 102 at the Loudoun campus. I began teaching at NOVA in January 2009 while finishing my Ph.D. dissertation for University of Texas at Austin. My specialization is the history of Britain and the British Empire, especially British territories in the eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and India.
I previously taught undergraduate classes in art and architectural history in Texas and Colorado. In my “former life” I worked in graphic design for fighter jet maintenance manuals and in marketing for large engineering firms in Chicago and Denver.
In this course, we will explore the history of Western Civilization from the Ancient Near East through the Renaissance. You should keep copies of all your coursework, assignments, and emails – preferably all in one place, such as a 3-ring notebook. This might also be a place to collect articles, magazine clippings, and other outside information you see relative to the course, especially when they also relate to current events. That is optional and for your own information, but you might also want to share it with the class on-line.
Remember it is your responsibility to keep up with course assignments and homework. But if you have any problems, please contact me so we can work out how to help you move forward and succeed in the class.
The best way to contact me is by the email listed above. Please clearly indicate which class you are writing about. I will always try to answer within 24-48 hours.
Welcome to the course!
