CONTENT:

AUT 142 is the second course in a two-course study of automatic power trains designed to provide the automotive student with sufficient skills and experience to begin a career as an automotive power trains technician.  AUT 142 is a detail study of automatic transmission and automatic transaxles, diagnostics and repair. 

 

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

a. Explain the operation of torque converters and be able to diagnose torque converter problems.

b. Explain and diagnose planetary gear sets; which members are input, output, and reactionary to enable different modes of operation.  

c. Explain basic hydraulic operating principles of automatic transmissions and different activation devices.

d. Disassemble, inspect, repair, and reassemble an automatic transmission and transaxle.

e. Perform diagnostics on vehicle mounted automatic transmissions and transaxles.  

 

GENERAL:

Study the entire text, specific readings will be assigned; however, students are responsible for both the classroom and shop texts.

 

Student Handbook:

Students are reminded to read Sections II, Student Conduct, Section VI, Academic Dishonesty and Section VII Information Technology Student/Patron Ethics Agreement and NVCC Computer Use Agreement, of the student handbook.  If you have any questions or need clarification, please ask.

 

STUDENT ASSISTANCE:

Students who have special needs or require accommodations need to inform the instructor and the Counseling Department. Please let me know by the end of the second class/lab period.

 

Quizzes:

Expect a quiz at the beginning of each class. Additional oral or written quizzes may be given at any time.  In the event that you miss a quiz, you can only take a make-up if you have a valid excuse for missing the quiz (Make-ups may be out of class written assignments or in class presentations).

 

ATTENDANCE:

Regular attendance is strongly recommended.  The quizzes, tests, and laboratory contract are the basis of your grade, missing class or lab will affect your ability to pass the course.  Let me know if you will not be able to make class by leaving a message on my answering machine!  Missing 3 classes will result in a failing grade for the class.

 

Tool Requirement:

Students must have tools to participate in lab.  Students who do not bring the recommended tools to lab will not be allowed to participate in lab.

 

Safety:

Students are required to have leather shoes and safety glasses to participate in lab.  Students without these items will not be allowed to participate in lab.     

 

CLASS START/END TIMES:

Class begins at 6:00 PM and ends at 11:45 PM on Tuesday nights.   In the event I am delayed more than 15 minutes beyond the beginning of class, students are instructed to contact another automotive instructor in the automotive lab area or call the Science and Technology division secretary located in Colgan Hall ext. 6604/6605 for directions.

IN REGARDS TO TRAVEL TO CLASS DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER, USE COMMON SENSE. IF THE ROADS ARE UNSAFE, DO NOT DRIVE!

 

COURSE WITHDRAWAL:

In the event you are unable to complete the course requirements and you wish to withdrawal, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLETING THE NECESSARY FORMS available at the Admissions & Records office to obtain a "W" grade.  Failure to do so on you part is a failing grade for the course.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Achieve a passing average in the oral/written quizzes.

2. Achieve a passing average in the midterm and final exam.

3. Complete the lab contract.
