CONTENT:

AUT 267 is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive knowledge of automotive brake
systems including operating principles, components, maintenance, repair, diagnostic procedures as they relate to the modem automobile. Emphasis is placed upon suspension/brake component inspection, logical trouble shooting techniques, repair, and adjustments. The student will develop a working knowledge of the use of the brake lathe and brake equipment in correcting problems.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

a. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components of frame
suspension, and brake systems.

b. Demonstrate an understanding of the theories and terminology related to brake systems.

c. Learn to detect defects, troubleshoot, and make necessary repairs.

d. Comprehend the interrelationship of brake and suspension components, and their affect on each other.
e. Demonstrate use of service manuals in locating specifications to inspect, repair, and adjust
suspension/brake systems.

f. Identify existing problems related to tires, wheels, bearings, suspension systems, and brake components.
g. Prepare parts and labor estimates.

GENERAL:
Study the entire text, specific readings will be assigned; however, students are responsible for both the classroom and shop texts.

Students are reminded to read Sections II, Student Conduct, and Section VI, Academic Dishonesty, of the student handbook. If you have any questions or need clarification, please ask.

Student Assistance

Students who have special needs or require accommodations need to inform the instructor. Students who need special accommodations need to contact the Counseling department. Please let me know by the end of the second class/lab period.

Quizzes:

Expect a quiz at the beginning of each class. Additional written or oral quizzes may be given at any time. In the event that you miss a quiz, you must contact me by voice mail, Email or in person prior to the end of the normal class time on the day of the quiz. There will be no make up quiz given if you fail to notify me.

 

ATTENDANCE:

While attendance is not mandatory, regular attendance is strongly recommended. The quizzes, tests, and
laboratory contract are the basis of your grade, missing class or lab will effect your ability to pass the
course. Let me know if you will not be able to make class by  Email or phone.

CLASS START/END TIMES:

Class begins at 6:00 PM and ends at 11 :45 PM on Tuesdays. In the event I am delayed more than 10
minutes beyond the beginning of class, students are instructed to contact an automotive faculty/staff
member or the Science and Technology division secretary located in Colgan Hall ext. 6604/6605 for
directions.

The college policy for canceling classes due to inclement weather is not campus specific. The decision to
cancel classes for the entire college is made early in the morning for daytime classes and in the afternoon for evening classes (separate decisions). This information is available on local radio and TV stations as well as NOVANET. Phone 330-3770 (P.W. County), and 323-3770 (all others).

IN REGARDS TO TRAVEL TO CLASS DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER, USE COMMON SENSE. IF THE ROADS ARE UNSAFE, DO NOT DRIVE!

COURSE WITHDRAWAL:

In the event you are unable to complete the course requirements and you wish to withdrawal, YOU ARE
RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLETING THE NECESSARY FORMS
available at the Admissions &
Records office to obtain a  'W' grade. Failure to do so on you part is a failing grade for the course.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Achieve a passing average in the quizzes.

2. Attend class and participate in class discussions.

3. Complete the lab contract.
