Course outline and Syllabus

Auto Power Trains, presents operation, design, construction, and repair

of power train components, of standard transmissions. Includes clutches, propeller

shaft, universal joints, rear axle assemblies, fluid couplings, as well as 3,4, 5, and 6

speed transmissions with or without overdrive.

Lecture is appox. 11/2 hours Lab appox. 11/2 hours

General Course Purpose:

Aut. 141 is the first course in a two-course study of automotive standard and automatic

power trains designed to provide the automotive student with sufficient basic skills and experiences to begin a career as an automotive technician.

Aut. 141 is a detailed study of manual transmissions, differentials, and transaxles. 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

    1. Explain the operation of , and perform service on, both standard and limited slip differentials.
    2. Identify and perform service on both cardin and constant velocity universal joints.
    3. Explain both the operation and service of clutch systems used with manual transmissions and transaxles.
    4. Explain the operation of manual transmissions and transaxles.
    5. Disassemble, inspect, repair, and reassemble manual transmissions and transaxles.

      1. Differentials
      2. Drive line service.
      3. Clutch systems.
      4. Manual transmissions-principles of operation.
      5. Manual transaxles-principles of operation.
      6. Manual transmissions and manual transaxles service procedures.

WHEN IN LAB YOU WILL NEED SAFTY GLASSES

YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE LAB AREA OR MAYBE BE

ASKED TO LEAVE ALL TOGETHER AND HAVE A FAILING GRADE FOR THAT DAYS CLASS!!

CLEAN-UP

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITES

    1. Clean and return drain pans
    2. Sweep the floor & put trash in cans
    3. Clean up any spills (oil, antifreeze, etc.).
    4. Clean the sink; assure paper towels are disposed of properly.
    5. Return tools to tool room.
    6. Return equipment to proper place, make certain accessories are organized.
    7. Check with instructor for other up assignments as needed.

 

NOTE:

Janitorial service is not provided in the automotive labs,

Please help your NVCC automotive program a model facility.

 

Personnel and students are invited to use NVCC cars and equipment for training experience only during scheduled lab classes. Northern Virginia Community College will not be responsible for the loss, theft, or damage to cars, tools, parts, or equipment of the students or other personnel. It is the person's responsibility

To mark and keep track of their cars, parts, tools, and equipment. All items should be marked with the owner's name, phone number, social security number, and address.

Automotive Laboratory Rules:

    1. All students and instructors who participate in automotive laboratories (and to visitors to such labs) must wear suitable eye protective devices of industrial quality in accordance with the Virginia Eye Statute.
    2. 1. Eye safety devices shall be worn at all times in the automotive

      labs when there is student activity in progress.

      2. Eye protective devices shall be of the type(s) appropriate to the

      hazards likely to be encountered in the automotive lab.

    3. All vehicles will be chocked and emergency brake applied. Automatic transmissions in park or neutral. Manual transmissions in neutral.
    4. Appropriate clothing will br worn during labs sessions.
      1. Shoes will be hard sole and upper-safety shoes recommended.
      2. Loose, dangling clothing or attire is not permitted.
      3. Long hair will be tied up or secured.
      4. Jewelry and rings must be removed.
    1. No engine will be run without an external vent hose connected and
    2. Exhaust system turned on.

    3. Dust from brake shoes will never be blown off with air hose. The
    4. Appropriate parts washer will be utilized.

    5. Unauthorized visitors or customers are not allowed in the lab.
    6. Ignition key will be removed from switch unless it is required for testing.
    7. Students will not get into cars except as required for repairs.
    8. Smoking, eating, and drinking will be allowed in the classrooms and labs and be confined to designated areas.
    9. No work will be performed on commercial vehicles.
    10. No work will be performed without a signed work order, which must be displayed on the cars windshield.
    11. No lab tools or equipment will be used off campus.
    12. All tools and equipment will be returned to their proper places not later than 15 minutes before the end of lab period.
        1. All students are expected to return cleaned tools and equipment to the proper storage area before reporting to assigned clean-up station.
        2. Students are responsible for there own parts and supplies, they must be stored in specified place or will be placed in the waste cans.
    1. With the instructors permission, the student will be permitted to work on their own cars during their assigned lab period only when applicable to their lab contract work.
    2. NO student work will be performed without proper supervision (instructor or instructor's aide).
    3. Students may not leave the lab without permission of the lab instructor or his designated representative.
    4. No one is allowed in the tool storage area expect the assigned tool room keeper, staff and faculty in the Automotive Division, AE building.
    5. No work will be performed on cars for which specifications are not available.
    6. Students are required to use their own hand tools.

General Preparation for Class:

Students should expect to spend up two (2) hours in outside

Preparation for each lecture and lab hour in the classroom. This includes

Study of reading assignments contained in this course outline, other

reading assignments which may be made from time to time, and

preparation of homework. THE BENEFIT FROM THIS COURSE

WILL DEPEND IN LARGE MEASURE ON THE EFFORT

EXPENDED BY THE SYUDENT IN PREPARATION FOR CLASS.

It is recommended that all students supplement their study of this course

By using materials related to the subject in Service Manuals and other

Sources of technical data.

Quizzes and Homework:

Quizzes will cover the materials from the reading assignments, the

lecture and the lab exercise.

Books and other information will follow on the day of the first day

of class.

NO make up quizzes will be given, execpt at the Instructors Discretion!!!!!
