Course objective:
To provide the student with the fundamental knowledge of the development of western drama and the techniques of the theatrical arts of direction, acting, and design.

Oedipus by Sophocles.
The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.

Expectations:
In addition to attending class lectures, each student is expected to...

  1. Attend one live theatrical productions and work four hours in the scene or costume shop, or...
  2. Attend one live theatrical production and write a short paper (4 to 6 pages, double spaced) comparing and contrasting the dramatic structure of Sophocles' Oedipus and Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (Papers are due no later than Thursday, April 30), or...
  3. Actively participate as a performer or crew leader in Moving Spaces: Shadows and Lights or The Merchant of Venice.
A student attending a live theatrical production should write a short note answering the following two questions on their program: (1) Which character did you find most memorable? (2) What was the most "enjoyable" moment in the show? Programs should be turned in the week following the performance. All programs are due no later than Thursday, April 30.

Grading:
The class grade is determined through a point system. Points are earned on the four exams, the outside activities (play attendance, lab work, essays) and attendance. The following scale will be used to determine grades: 93% of the top score will be an A; 92 to 85%, a B; 84 to 75%, a C; 74 to 65%, a D; below 65% will be an F.

Attendance Policy:
Attendance is taken during class lectures. A student will earn one (1) point for each Sign-In sheet he/she signs, and one half (1/2) point for each excused absence. It is the student's responsibility to notify me in writing of all excused absences.

Make-up Exams:
Make-up Exams will contain mini-essay, and short answer questions, not the true/false or multiple-choice questions used during the regular class exams. Make-up exams may be scheduled anytime before the end of the term.
