On the map locate and clearly label the locations of the following items:

Manifest Destiny & the splitting of the Union 

  1. Admission of this state to the union began the war with Mexico in 1846
  2. The new state added to the union in the Compromise of 1850
  3. In the 1850s this “Bleeding” state became known for its ongoing conflict over slavery
  4. This region on the Pacific coast was the main destination for western settlers before gold was found in California
  5. The Mormons fleeing religious persecution fled here and “made the desert bloom.”
  6. John Brown’s raid on a federal armory here was one of the precursors to the Civil War.

The Civil War:

  1. The first shots of the Civil War were fired in this state on April 12, 1861
  2. Locate the battle of Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862)
  3. Locate the siege of Vicksburg (May 19- July 4, 1863)
  4. Locate the battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863)
  5. Locate where Lee surrendered (Appomattox Court House, April 9, 1865)
  6. This state, admitted to the Union in 1863, was created during the Civil War by southerners opposing secession.
  7. Lightly color and label the slave states (except the one from question F) that remained in the union. These states are known as the “Border States”.
  8. Riots against the Federal Draft occurred in this city in July of 1863
