Review Sheet
Below are a series of possible essay questions for the final exam. On the exam you will be given a choice from two or three of the following topics and must write an answer on one (1) question.

The middle of the 1800s saw the emergence of three different social philosophies: socialism, anarchism and feminism. In a well thought out essay, define each of these philosophies, compare and contrast it with the other two, and provide an appropriate example to illustrate your detailed knowledge of each philosophy.
The middle 1800s saw the origins of ways of viewing the world that still reverberate today. Charles Darwin and Karl Marx, two major thinkers of the mid-century left a lasting impression on our world. Discuss the issues involved with Darwin and his theory, its relation to religion, effect on society and politics, and his historical importance. Examine the thoughts of Karl Marx: his views on economics and politics, economics and thought, the working class, why Marxism gained adherents and his historical importance.
European nations scrambled to gain imperial possessions at the tail end of the 19th century. In a well detailed essay identify and explain the major reasons for this European land grab. Make sure to illustrate your points with well supported examples from specific countries that experienced first-hand the imperial ambitions of Europe.
World War I has been described as a war left unfinished that resulted in World War II. Do you agree or disagree? Explain and support your opinion in a clear and well written argument with at least three (3) well detailed examples.
What caused the Russian Revolutions of 1917? Who were the major players in the unfolding event? Give a concise background to, and outline the events of 1917. What significance did the revolutions have for Europe and the rest of the world?
The years between the first and second world wars saw the rise of authoritarian regimes in Central and Eastern Europe. Germany had Hitler, Italy had Mussolini and Russia had Stalin. Which of these rulers had the greatest effect on their own country? Pick one leader, explain why you selected him and provide a concise background of his rise to power. Support your selection with at least three (3) specific examples presented in a clear, organized essay.
World War II engulfed most of the world in conflict. What were the five most significant events relating to the unfolding war? Support your answer with logical and well supported arguments.
Explain how and why Chinese sovereignty was infringed from 1800 to the present. What were the main events/issues leading to the Chinese Civil War? How did the war end? What are the modern consequences of the civil war?
What is the Cold War? Who fought on each side? Why did they fight? How was the war fought in Europe, Africa, South America and Asia? What are some of the major conflicts?
How did life change in sub-Saharan Africa from 1800 to the present? What major changes occurred? How did economic conditions change? How would life in much of this area be described today? Be sure to use specific, detailed answers.
Israel and the Middle East have a very troubled history. Beginning in the 20th century the ground work was laid for present day hostilities. What are the major events in the formation and history of the state of Israel? Why do present day hostilities have their roots in the history of Israel?
Since the end of the Cold War the face of Europe and the world has changed. When and why did the Cold War end? List and explain at least three (3) positive and three (3) negative concepts/issues existing in the post cold war world. |
