Your final project in the class will require use of the JSTOR (www.JSTOR.org) database. This assignment is designed to help prepare you for that project.

 

For this assignment you need to locate in the database the following short article:

The campus library website at http://www.nvcc.edu/loudoun/library/ will provide a free connection to JSTOR from on campus. From the library’s site, click “Magazines”, then click on “JSTOR”. You can save a PDF copy of any article by clicking “download”.

 

Students may access JSTOR from home using their NVCC email/blackboard user id and password. 2.   Limit your search by selecting "Articles" and "History" in the boxes below the search window.

3.   If searching for the article on mobs enter your search in the "exact phrase."

  1. What is the thesis (main argument) of this article?

  2. What point do you feel that the author made especially strongly? Why?

 

Specific Article based Questions

  1. The author discussed two types of mobs, premeditated and spontaneous. Give examples of each type of mob action. For what purposes did these mobs gather? What limitations did you notice in how the mobs acted?

  2. Why did mobs begin appearing in North America in the 1760s? Why were the mob actions so difficult for England to stop?

  3. Did all colonists support mob actions? Explain why they did or did not do so.
