IST 100 - INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION SYSTEMS (3 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduces students to general concepts of computer information systems. Presents terminology and effects of computers on daily life. Discusses available hardware and software as well as their applications. Exposes students to the system development process. Lecture 3 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

This course is designed to introduce students to general information processing concepts and terminology. The course will provide students with the necessary technical background to better understand the everyday computer applications that surround them and also to provide a foundation for other IST courses.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Students must be able to read and write at the college level.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

A. identify common applications of computers in business and industry
B. define and identify the major functions of information systems
C. name and describe common jobs in the computer field
D. name and identify the functions of the main hardware components of a computer system
E. describe and distinguish among the hardware and software used in different generations of computer development
F. name, properly sequence and explain the main steps in the System Development Life Cycle
G. name and identify the advantages and disadvantages of common tools and techniques in system analysis and design
H. name, properly sequence and explain the main steps in the Program Development Cycle
I. name and identify the advantages and disadvantages of common tools and techniques in program design
J. utilize program design concepts to design solutions to problems that require use of the basic control structures
K. explain what a basic management information system is and describe its role in the organization
L. explain what a database management information system is and describe its use in the organization
M. explain what application software is and categorize the types of application software
N. explain what systems software is and categorize the types of systems software
O. identify components and characteristics of telecommunications systems
P. discuss some practical uses of telecommunications and connectivity
