Brief Biography

I am a former NVCC student, having taken classes both on campus and through the Extended Learning Insititute (ELI), and a firm believer in directed study and on-line learning.

I received my B.A. degree from Eckerd College (Florida) in 1999 and my M.A. from Sam Houston State University (Texas) in 2004. I am a big Civil War buff and living so close to the many historic battlefields only piqued my interest in this conflict. My doctoral research at American University centers on orphans and orphan care in the post-Civil War South. If we conclude that most deaths during the war occurred from wounds received on the battlefield or from sickness and disease on the homefront, many children lost one or both parents. Who cared for these children? Where did the funding come from? When time permits I also enjoy studying the following:
