ENG 243-244 - SURVEY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE I - II (3 Cr.) (3 Cr.)

Prerequisite is ENG 112 or division approval.

Studies major English works from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present, emphasizing ideas and characteristics of the British literary tradition. Involves critical reading and writing.

Lecture 3 hours per week.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Common Goals for Principal Literature Surveys:
  1. To stimulate understanding and enjoyment of literary works of the period.
  2. To encourage an appreciation of the works in relationship to the cultures that produced them and to evaluate their relevance and importance for current society.
  3. To develop the ability to read literary texts for meaning structure, and style.
  4. To develop critical reading, writing, and thinking skills through the analysis of literary works.
Objectives Specific to English Literature:
  1. To stimulate students to an intelligent awareness and enjoyment of some important English literary achievements of the period from c. A.D. 700 to the present.
  2. To encourage students to become aware of the bearing of these works upon their culture and themselves.
  3. To develop students' abilities in critical reading and writing through assigned papers on various works of literature.
