ENG 243-244 - SURVEY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE I - II (3 Cr.) (3 Cr.)
Prerequisite is ENG 112 or division approval.
Studies major English works from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present, emphasizing ideas and characteristics of the British literary tradition. Involves critical reading and writing.
Lecture 3 hours per week.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Common Goals for Principal Literature Surveys:
- To stimulate understanding and enjoyment of literary works of the period.
- To encourage an appreciation of the works in relationship to the cultures that produced them and to evaluate their relevance and importance for current society.
- To develop the ability to read literary texts for meaning structure, and style.
- To develop critical reading, writing, and thinking skills through the analysis of literary works.
Objectives Specific to English Literature:
- To stimulate students to an intelligent awareness and enjoyment of some important English literary achievements of the period from c. A.D. 700 to the present.
- To encourage students to become aware of the bearing of these works upon their culture and themselves.
- To develop students' abilities in critical reading and writing through assigned papers on various works of literature.
