ENG 241-242 - SURVEY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE I - II (3 Cr.) (3 Cr.)

Prerequisite is ENG 112 or division approval.

Examines American literary works from colonial times to the present, emphasizing the ideas and characteristics of our national literature. Involves critical reading and writing.

Lecture 3 hours per week.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Common Goals for Principal Literature Surveys:
  1. To stimulate understanding and enjoyment of literary works of the period.
  2. To encourage an appreciation of the works in relationship to the cultures that produced them and to evaluate their relevance and importance for current society.
  3. To develop the ability to read literary texts for meaning structure, and style.
  4. To develop critical reading, writing, and thinking skills through the analysis of literary works.
Objectives Specific to American Literature:
  1. To examine and define the literary characteristics of writings by American authors from the Colonial period to the present.
  2. To understand the relationship of these works to American history and culture.
  3. To develop critical reading and writing skills through the analysis of a variety of literary genres.
