ENG 111-112 - COLLEGE COMPOSITION I - II (3 Cr.) (3 Cr.)
Prerequisites are a satisfactory score on appropriate English proficiency examinations and four units of high school English or equivalent.
Develops writing ability for study, work, and other areas of writing based on experience, observation, research, and reading of selected literature. Guides students in learning writing as a process, understanding the audience and purpose, exploring ideas and information, composing, revising, and editing. Supports writing by integrating experiences in thinking, reading, listening, and speaking.
Lecture 3 hours per week. Graded as Letter Grades A, B, C, D or F
ENG 009 - INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION IN WRITING (3 CR.)
Focuses on individual writing needs as required by placement test scores. Provides support for students simultaneously enrolled in ENG 111. Credits are not applicable toward graduation.
Lecture 3 hours per week. Graded as Satisfactory ("S") or Unsatisfactory ("U")
COURSE PURPOSES
- To develop the student's ability to write clear expository prose and, for this purpose, to provide the student extensive practice in writing assignments of varying lengths, totalling a minimum of approximately 3,500 words.
- To develop the student's ability to read with an understanding of meaning and structure.
- To encourage the student to think logically and independently and to express ideas and opinions with force and clarity.
- To develop the student's ability to investigate and to write about the ideas and argumentative strategies of others.
