FTP using the Internet Explorer Browser

1.          Use Microsoft Internet Explorer as your browser:

2.          In the browser’s address window, type:

ftp://www.student.nvcc.edu

3.          Press [Enter]

4.          Log on to the ftp server using your own credentials such as:

a.      nvstu\YourUserName     [Note the backslash \\\\  , NOT the forward slash  /////]

[ Again, instead of YourUserName, insert your real username from the Lab, the one you have used in class/lab all semester, e.g. jsmith234 ]

b.     Type in your password

[Again, insert your password from the Lab, the one you have used in class/lab all semester]

c.     Press “Log On”

5.          When you see the directory listing of folders (with the statement “FTP root at www.student.nvcc.edu” on the top of the page), click the “Page” menu button on the right-hand side of the IE7 browser window and select “Open FTP site in Windows Explorer. If you don't see a Page menu button, try clicking on the Alt key and then type the letter"v" and then hopefully you see a drop-down menu with 'Open FTP site in Windows Explorer".”

[IMPORTANT!!!   If you see a folder with your name on it, do
NOT click on it (your name folder) to open it.]

6.          You will be prompted to log on again—use the same credentials as in #4 above.

7.          You will see a page with an entry “Other Places: Internet Explorer, My Documents, My Network Places” or something similar to that on the left side of the page, AND a rather blank white area on the right.  That white area is your empty website or web folder on the student Web Server at Annandale!

8.          You can drag and drop, or copy and paste files into this initially-empty window.  You will see them appear on that formerly empty page.

[You should rename your main webpage with the title “index.htm.”  If you have placed your index page, your linked page(s), and all of your images on the side of your desktop, it will be easy to drag and drop these onto the blank white area (if your website page is not maximized) –

use the “Restore Down” button at the top right hand corner of the window.]

9.          Open up any new browser (IE7, IE8, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc).   Then enter the URL (Web Address) of your newly uploaded webpage and check it.  Your URL should be something like:

http://www.student.nvcc.edu/home/YourName      [If your main webpage was index.htm, it should become visible in your browser.]

If you called your main webpage something else, like “final.htm,” then you have to go to:

http://www.student.nvcc.edu/home/YourName/final.htm

Either Way, you should see your home page.

10.     Mail me the URL given above (in Red).
