Motivating Employee Performance Through Work

Overview

This chapter is the first of two that addresses the strategies managers use to optimize the performance of their employees. We begin with a discussion of work design, starting with a look at historical approaches, followed by a discussion of the job characteristics theory. Next, we review the importance of employee involvement through participation in work. Finally, we discuss alternative work arrangements that can be used to enhance motivation and performance.
